Enlarged breasts in men: gynecomastia

If you think that women are the only ones who are very particular when it comes to the appearance of their breasts, then it’s time for you to know that some men also suffer from insecurity when it comes to the size of their breasts.

This condition is called Gynecomastia. It is defined as the abnormal hormonal imbalance that results in the aberrant volume of breast tissue in men. It can happen on both breasts and it is called bilateral gynecomastia. If only one breast is affected, it is called unilateral gynecomastia.

The top factor that causes this condition in men is hormonal changes. The first congenital gynecomastia that happens at birth disappears easily. When a man reached puberty, hormonal fluctuations occur. This triggers the formulation of gynecomastia. However, it will naturally disappear in about two years. Even 50-year-old men can have gynecomastia because of testosterone decline. What could be worse is that this condition is associated with testicular cancer, liver disease or hormonal imbalances related to glandular dysfunction or smoking marijuana.

Fortunately, plastic surgery can help patients with this condition. The intervention aims to reduce the size and volume of the enlarged breasts in men. It involves a semi-circular excision of the glandular excesses around the edges of the areola. Of course, this procedure must be performed under general anesthesia.

During the surgery, a layer of 8 to 10 mm of the glandular surplus is left to preserve the blood network vitality in the area. Usually, it takes the surgeon one hour to perform the intervention. For a smooth and speedy recovery, your surgeon will tell you to wear compression garments for a week after the surgery. However, if there is a large glandular volume excision, the surgeon will have to put drainage tubes during the first two or three days to absorb the sutures.
