Tummy tuck umbilical hernia

It is common for surgeons to encounter an abdominal hernia when performing a tummy tuck or any aesthetic abdominal surgery. An umbilical hernia is the most common hernia that has surgical implications during a tummy tuck. It is a protrusion due to pregnancy, an anatomical defect, or genetics. There is a hole in the floor of the belly button, and either fat of bowel protrudes through the belly button, it creates a bulge which is very obvious to the surgeon. A hernia is usually asymptomatic but it can sometimes cause pain and discomfort.

An adult’s umbilical hernia usually occurs when too much pressure is put on a weak part of the stomach muscles, which includes the following factors:

  • Being overweight
  • Frequent pregnancies
  • Multiple gestation pregnancies (having twins, triplets, etc.)
  • Fluid in the abdominal cavity
  • Stomach surgery
  • Having a persistent, heavy cough

These hernias can be small and may be located in different areas of the belly button including on the sides. Most commonly, they are due to a defect on the base of the belly button. Hernia has surgical implications that can be avoided and surgeons usually do a physical exam to any candidate for a tummy tuck. That is why initial consultation is really essential as well as the analysis of your anatomical condition. Being well informed can keep you away from these kinds of stressful complications.

If you are among the interested patients who want to undergo tummy tuck procedure or any kind of aesthetic abdominal surgery, be sure that you are armed with this knowledge in order to be ready before the intervention. By keeping yourself well-informed and by following the advice of your attending surgeon, you are decreasing the risks and possibility of having an abdominal hernia after a tummy tuck procedure.
