What is brachioplasty?

12th May 2017

What is brachioplastyPlastic surgery targets different areas of the body to improve a person’s overall appearance. The most common surgeries are performed on the torso, but procedures can also be performed on the extremities. One example is the brachioplasty, which is a type of surgery focusing on the arms.

Also known as an arm lift, a brachioplasty improves the appearance of the arms by removing excess skin and fat. Flapping arms, as others may call them, can be a result of extreme weight loss. It is also possible to develop loose skin from aging.

This can be a cause for people to feel conscious, especially when wearing sleeveless clothing. Most brachioplasty patients are anywhere from 35 to 65 years old, though anyone is eligible for the procedure. Candidates should be in good health and nonsmokers. It would also be best for patients who are already at or near their ideal weight before performing the surgery. Brachioplasty is not advised for overweight patients.

The procedure entails the removal of the excess skin and fat on the arms. General anesthesia would be administered on the patient and the surgery will typically last for two hours. As with most cosmetic surgeries, the surgeon will aim to have the incision hidden under the arm. The cut is made from the armpit to the elbow and liposuction would be used to remove the excess fat in the area. If needed, the muscles are also tightened to ensure that the arm looks smooth and tight.

After the surgery, patients may need to stay in the hospital for a couple of days. The patient will also be required to wear a tight fitting garment over the area to provide support. It is best not to do any strenuous activities to prevent complications. A scar will appear but will flatten over time. There are also available products that can prevent the scar from becoming too large and obvious.

Patients should remember that brachioplasty is not a permanent solution. Sagging can return if they regain weight and lose it again in the future. Proper diet and exercise will not only maintain your brachioplasty results; it will lead you to a healthier lifestyle as well.
