What to do before scheduling your plastic surgery

Despite the fact that nowadays it can take days and even weeks to be able to make an appointment with your favorite hairdresser or nail technician, some people still believe that when it comes to plastic surgery, you can have your procedure done tomorrow. This is very far from reality, and it would be a good idea to steer clear of the idea and the plastic surgeon that offers this option.

We call the weeks before the surgery is performed as the pre-operative period. During this time, the patient needs to prepare and also do some other things. For example, most procedures would require the patient to have blood tests done, as well as other tests and examinations. In the case of breast enhancement procedures, the plastic surgeon will ask you to have a breast echography or a mammography performed in the weeks beforehand to make sure there are no contraindications for the procedure. These are important things to do before scheduling your plastic surgery.

Aside from the tests, you will also be required to consider the pros and cons carefully and decide whether this is the right time to have the procedure or not. Think about the requirements of the post-operative period before scheduling. Make sure you can take time off from work that is needed for the recovery period and that you will have someone around the house to help you with the chores for a few days post-op. You should understand that driving will not be possible immediately after the surgery and for a few more days or even weeks, depending on the procedure performed. This means that you won’t be able to drive your kids to school or their other activities. Before scheduling your plastic surgery, make sure there is someone available to replace you in doing these things at least for the first week post-op.

Another thing you should do before scheduling your plastic surgery is to talk about it with your close friends and family members, so they know what to expect and are prepared. Plastic surgery is a very personal decision, and you should talk to them only after making this decision alone and for your own sake. But them knowing what to expect after you have plastic surgery can help you in the long run as you might need help in the days following the procedure. Some complications such as blood clot formation, excessive bleeding, or infection occur in the hours/days following the surgery, and this is why you shouldn’t be alone for the first 48-72 hours after the procedure. Make sure that someone is available to be there for you and that he or she understands the potential risks and complications that could occur during this time and what to do in case something happens.
