Breast reduction aftercare

17th Dec 2020

Breast reduction is the procedure recommended for women with overly large breasts that are confronted with multiple discomforts because their breasts are too large compared to the rest of their anatomy. Most women confronted with this issue have difficulties performing most physical activities, struggle to find clothes, and also deal with dermatological conditions on the inframammary fold due to the lack of air flow and perspiration in the area.

Breast reduction is the only effective method we have nowadays to correct breasts that are too big compared to the rest of the body. There are no diets, physical exercises, creams, pills or massages that you can get to help reduce the size of the breasts.

Patients should be aware of the risks and complications associated with this procedure before scheduling. There is also special aftercare that is required after breast reduction surgery.

There are people who still tend to believe that undergoing plastic surgery is not something that needs preparing for because these procedures are performed only for aesthetic purposes. While the aesthetic goal is very important, the surgical act is still as the name suggests – a surgical procedure. This means that the same rules for a normal surgery also apply in this case.

Aftercare is necessary after any type of surgery, and this is not dependent on the goals of the procedure. Generally speaking, patients are advised to look after the surgical incisions, make sure the area is clean and dry at all times, and avoid lifting heavy objects or put any pressure on the operated areas.

The aftercare after breast reduction surgery is mostly about making sure an infection doesn’t occur and the wounds are not opening. The patient will have to check the incisions daily or even a few times per day and clean them as per the doctor’s instructions. The area needs to be dry at all times until the incisions are fully closed. This means that you shouldn’t apply any gel or cream that your plastic surgeon didn’t prescribe as it increases the risk of infection exponentially.

The patient is free to take a shower upon the return home after the surgery, but the areas of the incisions need to be kept dry. The medical staff will give you details on how to shower without getting the bandages wet. Also, keep in mind that warm baths are not recommended for at least two to three weeks after the procedure.

A special post-op bra or good quality sports bra needs to be worn non-stop for about three weeks after breast reduction surgery. The breasts need both the support and the level of compression that can only be achieved with these types of bras.
