Breast Augmentation

Surgery to increase the size and improve the shape of the breasts is called Breast Augmentation Houston. The size and shape of the surgically enhanced breast will differ according to the particular breast implant selected. Dr. Cortés typically places the implant behind the muscle to increase the bra cup size.

The following pages describe the basics of breast augmentation, what it can and cannot accomplish, how the surgery is done, and what to expect after surgery.

Special Qualities of the Wonder Breast Augmentation Houston

Dr. Cortés uses a very technically focused approach in planning individual boobs augmentation, carefully considering each patient’s anatomy and measurements to assure the best fit. “Bigger is Better” is not a rule that should be applied without thoughtful evaluation of outcomes.

Dr. Cortés helps each patient choose breast implants, not only to provide a beautiful result but also to ensure that the implant will not cause any problems after the surgery. His carefully developed system for choosing an implant takes into consideration the patient’s anatomy as well as the desired breast size.

Who Is the Best Candidate for the Wonder Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation Houston is recommended for patients who desire more generous breast dimensions. There are different types of breasts, and an individual’s anatomy will determine the best technique for breast augmentation surgery.

Breast augmentation is not the solution for extremely saggy breasts, where the nipple-areola complex is more than 3 cm lower than its ideal anatomical location. If you have saggy breasts, a better option for you might be a simple wonder breast lift or a wonder breast lift. Learn More about Breast Procedures

Types of Implants

Breast implants used today are FDA-approved medical devices. They have a silicone shell filled with saline intraoperatively or prefilled with silicone by the manufacturer. Science has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that breast implants do not cause any chronic medical diseases, cancer, etc. One factor that must be considered in planning the best breast augmentation for a particular patient is the type of implant. There are different options to consider: 1. The filler used to give the implant its substance, which can be saline or silicone. 2.Size of the implant, from 150 cc all the way to 800 or even 900 cc. 3. Projection of the implant, whether high, moderate or low profile. 4. The shape of the implant, which can be round or more anatomically shaped.

The size of the breast implant is measured in cc, or cubic centimeters. Prefilled silicone breast implants are available in sizes that vary 25 cc between one size and the next. For example, if a woman wanted an implant slightly larger than a 400 cc implant, the next choice would be a 425 cc implant, and so forth. Saline implants are somewhat more versatile because they are placed inside the breasts as empty bags and then filled to the desired volume. Thus a wide variety in terms of size can be achieved using a saline implant.

Your Consultation

We encourage you to visit our YouTube channel drwilbertocortesliveto view educational videos created by Dr Cortés. These videos will help you better understand the breast augmentation process. During the initial consultation, Dr Cortés assesses not only your breasts but also your chest dimensions. The beauty of a woman’s breast is based partly on the size of the breasts, but also on the relationship between the breast and the chest. The doctor will assess your skin tone, the location of the inframammary fold, and the size of the nipple and areola, among other factors. Dr Cortés will measure your breasts to determine any natural asymmetry that you have before surgery. Remember that your breasts are sisters, not twins. There are always variables that need to be considered during your surgery, such as individual breast volumes, nipple location, etc. Dr Cortés will often recommend different sizes of implants for each side to improve the symmetry of your breasts so you do not look lop-sided after surgery. He will also assess and recommend the most appropriate volume to provide you with beautiful results to suit your individual preferences. He will study your medical history, your social history, the medications you are taking, and any other factors likely to affect your comfort and safety during and after surgery. When choosing an implant, patients typically think in terms of cup sizes. “What cup size would be appropriate for my body?” In general, every cup size represents about 150 cc, so if you choose a 450 cc implant it will increase your breast by 3cup sizes. You should be aware that, even though breast implants are permanent medical devices, there is no guarantee that they will last a lifetime. There is even a chance that you may need surgery in the future for breast-related issues related to breast augmentation surgery itself.

Surgery Risks

Breast augmentation carries risks like those of any surgical procedure, such as infection and bleeding. Also, there are some complication issues connected with breast implants. One of the most common complications (occurring in 8 to 10 percent of patients) is capsular contracture. This is a scar that forms around the implant. Most patients develop a scar around the implant, but typically it is a very thin layer that does not cause any issue. Although bleeding and infection may cause capsular contracture, most of the time we do not understand why capsular contracture develops. In severe cases of capsule contracture, the scar gets thick and squeezes the implant, causing pain, hardness, and distortion of the breasts. If this occurs, there are various ways of fixing this issue. If a contracture happens early after surgery, medications like vitamin E and Singulair have been useful in softening the breasts. It is also very important after surgery to perform the breast exercises that Dr Cortés recommends to decrease the likelihood of this effect. Finally, if the capsular contracture gets severe, you may need surgery to remove the scar partially or completely. In rare cases, patients can develop an infection early after surgery or even months to years after surgery. If this occurs, in some cases the implant needs to be removed. It may be replaced 6 months later. The sensation of the breasts can change after breast augmentation, in the breast mound as well as the nipple-areola complex. The nipple may get very sensitive or it may become numb. There can be patches of numbness around the breasts. Most of these symptoms disappear after a while, but in some patients they are permanent. A breast implant does not cause any problems to the baby if you get pregnant after a breast augmentation, and it does not usually interfere with the ability to breast-feed. However, your breasts can change after your pregnancy, and you may then desire additional surgeries to restore your breasts to their previous form. We must recognize the risk that breast implants may rupture, either due to injury or from normal compression or movement of the implant that may eventually cause the shell to leak. If a saline breast implant breaks, then your breast will be deflated within a few hours. The body will naturally absorb the saline because it is water. In cases where a silicone gel implant leaks or breaks, the gel might escape, but it typically stays near the perimeter of the breast pocket. A woman may not even notice that her silicone implant is ruptured, but if a physical exam or symptoms suggest a rupture, then an MRI can determine if there is an actual implant rupture. Mammography is slightly more difficult technically after breast surgery but is still recommended for women at risk for breast cancer. Breast implants do not increase the chances of women getting or dying of breast cancer.

Where Your Surgery Is Performed

Dr Cortés performs his surgeries in the Houston Northwest Medical Center, a fully accredited surgical facility.

Type of Anesthesia

Your procedure will be done under general anesthesia administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist.

Length of Stay

You will be discharged the same day of the surgery. If multiple procedures are done at the same time, you may need to stay overnight at the hospital.

The Surgery

Dr Cortés performs breast augmentations using different types of incisions. The most common ones are at the breast fold or through the areola. During your consultation, he will discuss with you which one would be the best incision for you to achieve the successful placement of the implant. Regardless of where the incision is placed, the scars tend to heal very well. After Dr Cortés performs the incision, he dissects through the breast tissue until the muscle of the chest is identified. Holding the muscle, he will cut it at the inferior edge to create a pocket under the muscle where he inserts the implant. Dr Cortés will use a size that provides a match to the volume of the other breast. As mentioned before, it is extremely common for women to have some asymmetries in a volume that may become more noticeable after surgery. Dr Cortés uses the most appropriate implant to minimize asymmetries between the breasts. Incisions are closed with absorbable sutures and you will be discharged.

What to Expect After Your Surgery

Pain after breast augmentation is very minor. Nevertheless, you will receive pain medication to control any signs of discomfort. Your breasts will feel tight at first and your implants will ride very high, sometimes with an unnatural look, but all of this will settle within a month if you do the recommended exercises. Sometimes a breast strap is used to help the implant settle in the right place. Your sutures will come out in about 7 to 10 days and you need to start doing the breast exercises within days of the surgery.

Getting Back to Normal

You may shower soon after the surgery. Your breasts will be very sensitive to stimulation, but you must perform your breast exercises as directed. Your scars will heal slowly and will take about a year to mature. They will never disappear completely, but they will not be conspicuous after they mature. If you follow the recommendations carefully, you should be able to return to work within 3 to 7 days. You will be able to exercise 3 to 4 weeks following surgery and lift heavy loads in about 4 to 6 weeks. Routine mammograms and breast exams still need to be performed.

The New You

If the proper implant size is chosen, you will have breasts whose beauty will last a long time. You will need to be patient since the settling of the breasts will take weeks or sometimes months.
