CAN MY BREAST IMPLANT EXPLODE ON A PLANE?

If you’re interested to undergo breast augmentation, there’s a high chance that you have already searched the Internet. But know that there are plenty of misconceptions that are associated with this surgical procedure. There have been far too many urban tales about breast implants, ranging from the believable to the downright absurd.

One of the more fantastically farfetched is that the implant will explode once the plane reaches an altitude of 20,000 feet. With the popularity of breast implants, said to be roughly 1 in every 26 women in America having it, the planes would have been filled with exploding implants and that has not happened at all.

You need to understand how the implants are manufactured and what it is made of so you can know why this is simply not possible. Silicone implants have thick, durable silicone shells. The shell is actually the bag, which is also made of silicone. These implants are filled with silicone that is of high-grade medical quality. Rigid and stringent testing of the implant has conclusively demonstrated that the silicone implant is built to withstand trauma and even mammogram and other extreme conditions.

It is highly unlikely for a silicone implant to rupture, although with time and if the shell weakens, that can happen. That is why it is also stressed that silicone implants are not permanent and lifetime devices and under normal conditions and with proper care, it can last for a long time.

Definitely, changes in the air pressure inside an airplane cannot cause the implant to explode. It is absolutely not true! Silicone implants are designed to withstand altitude changes and pressure. So next time you go on vacation, relax and don’t worry about your implants exploding in mid-air. This is so not going to happen!

Always remember to ask a Board-certified plastic surgeon so you wouldn’t be a victim of misleading misconceptions.
