Tummy tuck scars

Patients who are coming from other surgeons are often unhappy with the appearance of their scars. But in reality, you need to accept that plastic surgery often leaves a scar.  The amount of your excess skin and other important factors will determine the length of the scar. Many things can happen with the scar after surgery. The scar can get thick, wide and discolored. Patients often lead to an impression that if somebody has a good scar, their surgeon is more competent than the one who operated with a bad scar. In other words, bad scar, bad surgeon. So if you don’t want to have such a disgusting scar, you might as well choose your surgeon wisely.

The healing of scars depends on how well you heal and on your genetics. The two things that a surgeon can control are that the scar is symmetric and not inverted which means that when the scar heals, it does not go in.

When the scar is closed, it should be everted which means the scar should be raised slightly during the first couple of months. This will help to prevent an aesthetically unpleasant scar. The edges of the scar will go in if a scar that was not sutured properly will be inverted. You need to understand that the way you heal is the way you heal when you have a scar or cosmetic surgery. The surgeons are physicians, not magicians. There are certain things that can be done to minimize scar formation such as Kenalog injections, silicon dressings, compression of the scar, massage of the scar, etc.

If you have a scar that is red, wide and if you developed a keloid, that doesn’t mean that the surgeon is bad. How you heal is how you heal and you need to accept this prior to surgery.
