3 Things to know about the Brazilian butt lift

15th Oct 2021

The Brazilian butt lift is probably one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures today. It entails the use of the patient’s own fat cells to enhance the shape and size of the buttocks. The procedure is all-natural and boasts impressive results when performed on eligible candidates and by board-certified and experienced plastic surgeons. Here are three things to know about the Brazilian butt lift:

1.    It is not a substitute for butt implant surgery

While the Brazilian butt lift can also result into an augmentation of the buttocks due to the volume added with fat transfer, the procedure is not a substitute for butt implant surgery. Butt implant surgery is performed to achieve a spectacular projection of the buttocks using implants that are inserted into the gluteal muscles, positioned on the upper part of the buttocks.

When fat transfer is performed, we can’t achieve the same type of augmentation and increase in projection in just one session of fat grafting. There is a limited amount of fat that can be injected in one session, and injecting too much fat in one area can result in the death of the fat cells and the formation of granulomas. The Brazilian butt lift is an amazing procedure to redefine the buttocks and get a perky effect with moderate augmentation, but if you want a big increase, butt implant surgery is still the best procedure for you.

Also, it is important to keep in mind that the results of the Brazilian butt lift can be sustained only if the patient is dedicated to keeping a stable weight and avoiding weight fluctuations.

2.    It is performed with the patient under general anesthesia

It is true that the Brazilian butt lift is a procedure less invasive compared to butt implant surgery. However, the procedure also entails the use of general anesthesia for the comfort of the patient. Keep in mind that the procedure entails a combination of liposuction and fat transfer, so the operative time can be quite long, depending on the areas to be treated. The Brazilian butt lift is also a complex and major plastic surgery procedure and should be treated as such, even if it doesn’t entail significant incisions or the use of implants.

3.    The recovery period has strict requirements for patients

To be able to get good results with the Brazilian butt lift, patients are required to follow a strict post-op protocol. Smoking is strictly forbidden during the recovery period for at least three to six weeks. Otherwise, the fat cells transferred might die. To preserve the fat cells grafted, patients are also advised to avoid intense physical activities and also sleeping on the back or sitting on the buttocks for a minimum of three weeks, preferably more.
