Probably all the brochures or sites advertising plastic surgery abroad emphasize the idea of the 2-in-1: enhancing your appearance while enjoying an exotic holiday. Aside from this, there are also patients interested in undergoing plastic surgery in the United States but would like to combine the recovery period with a holiday. Is this possible? I often hear the question “can I go on a holiday during recovery after a BBL?” The question usually comes up after patients find out that they need to take time off from work for about two weeks after the procedure. There are valid reasons to ask such a question, considering the fact that many of us only have a couple of weeks’ holiday per year. Because plastic surgery is an elective procedure, it means that you won’t get time off from work for medical reasons and you need to take days off from your holiday. The Brazilian butt lift entails harvesting fat cells from areas of the body with an excess of adipose tissue and their transfer to the buttocks to get more volume and a more attractive shape. The procedure is performed on patients under general anesthesia and can last a few hours, depending on the complexity of each case. After the Brazilian butt lift, the patient needs to wear compression garments on the operated areas for about three weeks non-stop and after this for the same amount of time, but only during the day. This means that if you go on holiday directly after getting a BBL, you will be wearing a girdle and also compression pants non-stop. In other words, going to an exotic destination doesn’t make a lot of sense as you will not be able to expose your body, swim, or do any other activities that we usually do on holidays. It is also important to let patients know that sun exposure is to be avoided for a minimum of six months after the procedure to avoid skin discoloration and other complications. This means that if you go on a holiday somewhere sunny, you need to keep the areas operated on fully covered at all times. Now, let’s discuss another important recommendation that needs to be respected after the BBL. We are talking about not sitting directly on the buttocks or lying on the back. This means that the level of comfort might be reduced, despite being in a beautiful vacation destination. In other words, if you want an active holiday after the BBL, chances are it is not going to happen. However, if you want to spend the recovery period in a hotel in a nice location with room service and without the family drama, you should totally go for it.
