The butt implant surgery is a popular plastic surgery procedure used by tens of thousands of people in the US alone. The procedure involves the use of foreign objects called “implants” to add projection and shape to the buttocks, so it looks more feminine and attractive.

There are many people who are not aware of the important facts regarding the procedure. Then there are patients who consider undergoing the surgery but have questions that need to be answered so they can make a sound decision. I have answered the frequently asked questions about buttock implants below.

Question: What is a buttock implant?

Answer: A buttock implant is an artificial device made up of semi-solid silicone. Also called a “gluteal implant”, it is inserted inside the buttocks and placed in the intended location. This results in a bigger and more voluptuous buttock.

Question: Where are the implants placed inside the butt?

Answer: The butt implants are placed under, within, or above the gluteal muscle. Most plastic surgeons prefer the first two options because they come with relatively lower risk and deliver better results. Placing the implant under or within the butt muscle helps them get more tissue coverage, which makes the results look better.

Question: What type of anesthesia is used for the surgery?

Answer: The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and on an outpatient basis. You will be fully asleep throughout the surgery. A board-certified anesthesiologist will administer the anesthesia and monitor your health all throughout the operation.

Question: How are the implants inserted into the buttocks?

Answer: The implants are inserted into the buttocks through incisions in the butt. The size and shape of the incision depends on the size and shape of the buttock implants. The incision will gradually develop into a scar tissue after the surgery.

Question: Will the butt implant rupture or leak?

Answer: No. The gluteal implants will not rupture or leak because they are made up of highly durable material. Unlike breast implants, they do not comprise of a shell filled with saline or silicone gel. Instead, butt implants are totally and robustly constructed with a semi-solid silicone material, which is completely resistant to leaks and ruptures.

Question: What implant size is suitable for me?

Answer: Your aesthetic goals and existing aesthetic flaws in your buttocks determine the implant size that is best for you. During the consultation session, the surgeon will examine your backside and know your aesthetic goals before recommending you the ideal gluteal implant size. Ideally, the butt implant should accentuate your butt dimensions and overall body outline. In this case, bigger is not always better. Your body size, weight, height, and butt dimensions will also have to be considered before your doctor recommends you a particular implant size.

Question: Will the results be immediately visible?

Answer: You will see a considerable improvement in the aesthetic features and size of your buttocks right after the intervention; however, complete results will transpire only after the butt have fully healed and the swelling has disappeared. This can take several weeks or even months to happen.

Question: What should I expect the final results to be?

Answer: When the final results appear, your buttocks will appear bigger, shapelier, and fuller. The aesthetic improvement in your butt will also help enhance your overall body outline and profile. You will feel more self-confident and should experience an improvement in your quality of life as well.

Question: How long will it take me to recover after the surgery?

Answer: After the surgery, it will take you 2-3 weeks to complete your primary recovery process. During this period, your body will heal to a greater extent and you will start feeling better by the end of the first 2 weeks. You may resume going to work after 2 weeks given that you already have the approval of your surgeon. However, full recovery after the butt implant surgery will take 6 weeks.

Question: Will I experience pain and discomfort during the recovery period?

Answer: Yes, you may experience some form of pain and discomfort during the first 2-3 days following the surgery. The intensity and length of the pain depend on your pain tolerance level and how the surgery is performed. Normally, oral pain relief medicines are enough to cope with the pain and discomfort; but in a case of severe pain, you may need IV pain relief medications.

Question: When can I resume doing physical activities?

Answer: You must avoid strenuous physical activities like jogging, weight lifting, jumping, doing exercises and sports for the first 6 weeks after the surgery. Stretching, bending, sleeping on your back, and sitting must be avoided for the first 2-3 weeks following the operation.

Question: Should I wear compression garments during the recovery period?

Answer: Yes, you will be required to wear compression garments for a few weeks after the surgery. These garments are designed to reduce the post-surgery swelling, protect you from infection, and expedite the healing process. Make sure to wear the compression garments for the recommended time period. Of course, you may take them off whenever you take a shower.

Question: When will I be allowed to drive after the surgery?

Answer: The butt implant surgery is a major operation. Because of that, you will be required to avoid driving for the first 3 weeks following the procedure. After that, you may resume driving; however, make sure to place a soft cushion under your hamstring muscle to keep any undue pressure off your backside.
