How young is too young for a breast reduction?

06th Oct 2021

Breast reduction surgery is a procedure that can help women with large breasts get relief from the multiple pains and discomforts associated with this issue. It is performed to correct the excessive volume of the breasts, as well as other imperfections that can be associated with it such as sagging breasts and enlarged areolas. Breast reduction requires the use of a general anesthetic, and the duration of the surgery is about two hours. The hospitalization is no longer than the surgery, and the patient is free to return home if no complications occur.

When it comes to assessing the eligibility to undergo plastic surgery, the age is not necessarily a criterion for most procedures. As long as the patient is of legal age and in good physical and emotional condition, usually the procedure can be performed. However, when it comes to breast reduction surgery, it is among the few plastic surgery procedures that can be performed and is sometimes recommended even before the patient is of age.

The excessive volume of the breasts can be a real burden for girls confronted with this issue from an early age, and it can be as soon as they are ten or eleven that the breasts are fully developed. When the breast hypertrophy is severe, it can put a lot of pressure on the spine and hence cause deformations that are difficult to correct later on in life. Moreover, having breasts so big at such an early age can trigger emotional issues for teenagers. Just imagine a little girl trapped inside a fully grown woman’s body as this is how it feels when the breasts are huge.

To avoid bullying as well as other health issues, it can happen for the plastic surgeon to recommend the procedure on patients who are under the age of 18 years old. However, the general recommendation is to wait until the mammary gland is fully developed and stabilized before getting plastic surgery on the breasts. This usually happens until the age of 16 years old for most patients. If the breast hypertrophy is indeed severe and there is a strong medical indication for it, breast reduction can be performed on patients that are as young as 14 years old.

However, going under this age can be problematic, even if possible. We need to keep in mind and make sure that the patient undergoing plastic surgery to reduce the size of the breasts is fully aware of the consequences. Mainly we are talking about the occurrence of permanent scars and the inability to breastfeed later on in life. It is important for patients also to be aware of the potential risks and complications associated with such a major plastic surgery procedure before making the decision to go through with it.
