Making the most out of the pre-operative consultation for breast augmentation

08th Jul 2021

The consultation for breast augmentation surgery can be a very emotional time for some patients. It is the time when they find out if they are eligible for the procedure and discuss with the plastic surgeon their reasons for undergoing and what they are trying to achieve with it.

Opening up about the reasons and motivations to resort to plastic surgery to enhance the breasts can be difficult for some patients, and this is why it is essential to choose a plastic surgeon that is not only talented, experienced, and board-certified, but also someone you can actually relate to and feel safe in his presence.

In some cases, one pre-operative consultation is enough and the procedure can be scheduled. The patient will still need to take some tests, mainly blood tests and also a breast echography or mammography, along with an additional meeting with the anesthetist.

To make the most out of the pre-operative consultation for breast augmentation, you should do certain things such as:

–    Prepare a list with everything you want to talk about

In the spur of the moment it might be difficult to remember all the things you want to discuss with the plastic surgeon, so maybe a list could help. Write down your questions and concerns so you can address them all during the consultation. This will make you feel more in control and give you a clear idea about what to expect before, during. and after the surgery.

–    Ask the surgeon to show you before and after pictures of patients

Getting an idea about the results to be expected can be difficult, so the plastic surgeon might help by showing you before and after pictures of patients undergoing the same procedure. You will have a much better idea if the patients have similar physical characteristics as you.

–    Do a little research about what type of implants are available

We are using now the fifth generation of implants. They are called gummy bears because they can hold their shape no matter what, just like the gummy bears we eat. In case the capsule of the implant is damaged, the consistency of the gel inside won’t allow the substance to spread in the breasts. Knowing a few things about breast implants will make it easier for you to choose the right type of implants together with the plastic surgeon.

–    Prepare a list with your medical history, current health condition and medication, including potential allergies

The plastic surgeon needs to know all the details about your current medical condition and also important events from the past. He will also want to know about allergies and if you are taking any medication at the moment. Prepare a list with these details, and you don’t leave anything out.
