A middle-aged woman recently visited us here at our Houston plastic surgery practice for an initial consultation. Her specific concern has to do with excess pockets of fat in her arms and a muffin top that doesn’t seem to go away despite being on a Paleo diet and running for half an hour thrice a week. After a thorough discussion of her concerns and aesthetic goals, we suggested liposuction. “But I’ve heard a lot of things about skin dimpling following liposuction?” was her initial response. Ah, the dreaded dimpling effect. Read on below to learn more about why dimpling occurs, who is at risk, and what needs to be done to prevent it from happening. Why Dimpling Occurs Generally, your skin and its surrounding tissues should heal evenly following liposuction and similar body contouring procedures. However, in some cases, the remaining fat underneath the skin may be unevenly distributed resulting to the textured appearance of the skin associated with dimpling. Apart from the uneven removal of fat, the following factors can also increase one’s risk of dimpling following liposuction: Extreme weight fluctuations following liposuction – Sudden loss or gain of weight can significantly alter the appearance of the skin resulting in dimpling. Poor skin elasticity – Patients who have poor skin elasticity prior to liposuction may choose to have body tightening procedures alongside liposuction such as a tummy tuck. Existence of cellulite prior to liposuction A large amount of fat is removed – Taking out too much fat in a single area can cause dimpling. How to Prevent Dimpling Following Liposuction Fortunately, dimpling following liposuction is highly preventable through the following steps: 1. Choose a highly experienced plastic surgeon to perform your liposuction. By doing so, you reduce your chances of uneven removal of body fat. 2. Take measures to keep your weight stable following liposuction. It may be best to be within your ideal body weight before liposuction to avoid drastic weight loss following liposuction. 3. Massage the skin to promote excellent circulation which allows the skin and its surrounding tissues to heal evenly. 4. Stay hydrated. Patients who are not well-hydrated following liposuction may experience significant water retention which in turn makes the skin appear uneven and puffy. 5. Consider skin-tightening procedures following liposuction such as an arm lift, tummy tuck, and a thigh lift. Non-surgical alternatives such as laser skin tightening treatments are also recommended.
