The role of plastic surgery in increasing self-esteem

07th Jun 2017

Plastic surgery has been defined as a surgical specialty designed to restore, reconstruct, alter or improve the human body. Through the years, we have seen the development of different types of plastic surgeries and its popularity has seen rapid growth especially in today’s celebrity culture. There’s a plethora of plastic surgeries that are available today that can dramatically improve the appearance of the different parts of the body. Many of these procedures produce impressive outcomes that bring happiness and satisfaction to the patient. The new and improved look after plastic surgery can also have social payoffs by helping patients become better at socializing with other people due to increased confidence.

Experts believe that plastic surgery plays an important role in increasing the self-esteem of patients. Patients who are born with a physical impairment can benefit well from plastic surgery. It can help them feel less conscious and insecure about a certain part of their body whose appearance they are not comfortable with. In some cases, a physical defect can also result from an accident or as a result of a previous surgery. There can be different reasons for deformity or disfigurement and corrective and reconstructive remedies can be achieved through plastic surgery.

Patients who have physical defects can have poor self-image and low self-esteem. The defect can make them the object of ridicule and victim of cruel taunts especially for children in school. Although many children learn to simply live with it, especially if they do not have the means to correct it, many carry that stigma through adulthood. Plastic surgery that can correct a physical defect can help relieve the emotional and psychological baggage.

Plastic surgery is also a solution to those who would want to improve the way they look. Although there is nothing wrong with the body parts that they want to alter, it can look better through surgery. These are also people who can’t get their body to look the way they would like to in spite of vigorous fitness and diet regimens.

Choosing a board certified, experienced and skilled surgeon with finely tuned aesthetic judgment honed from years of training and practice is crucial to ensure optimal results after surgery. There have been numerous studies and literature that show a boost in a patient’s self-esteem and confidence when the surgery is successful and the results are favorable.

While plastic surgery can boost a patient’s self-esteem, there are also cases wherein a patient is not satisfied with the results of the surgery even if it is a favorable one. They can become addicted to surgery so that they always find a flaw in their body, be it real or imagined, that they want to correct. Being of sound physical, mental and emotional health is one of the criteria for candidacy for those who want to undergo elective plastic surgery. This helps ensure that patients go into the surgery with realistic expectations and goals. In this way, they will be able to feel happier with their results.

A patient who has realistic expectations can be satisfied with the results and feel good about it. A satisfied and happy patient gets a boost in self-confidence that brings about a positive outlook that can, in turn, translate into an improved personal and social life. With this, they will be able to live a contented and better life. They wouldn’t be consumed with an insatiable obsession to modify areas of the body that they deem flawed or imperfect.
