The Advantage & Disadvantage of Breast Surgery

18th Oct 2018

Breast aesthetic surgery is a highly popular and efficacious procedure that can deliver shapelier, larger, firmer and perkier breasts. Having said that, there are many advantages and disadvantages that must be taken into account before making this personal decision.
What then are the advantages of aesthetic surgery for the breasts?
– Quick results! Cosmetic surgery will give you bigger breasts in a few hours. Once the surgical procedure is over, you will wake up with your brand new breasts with its enhanced volume and size. You do not have to wait weeks or months to see the first results. Normally, the final results will be visible after six to nine months when the surgical incisions have fully healed and implants or fats have settled.

– The choice is up to you! It is not a one-size-fits-all surgery. You have complete control over the size you want your breasts to have once the surgery is over. You can choose the cup size and the shape that you want to give to your breasts. Your surgeon will show you “before and after” pictures of other patients to give you an idea of what is best for you. However, you are strongly encouraged to listen and follow your plastic surgeon’s professional advice when it comes to choosing the size and type of breast implants to avoid future complications and ensure superior aesthetic results.

– Safe and accessible to many! Cosmetic breast surgery has been around for decades and statistics show that out of 1.7 million cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2015, it ranks among the top 5. Advances in medicine, technology and surgical techniques have greatly improved its safety factor, while the celebrity culture and 24/7 media cycle established its mainstream and popular appeal. Where before, it was only for the rich and famous like A-list celebrities and elite class, now it is more accessible to women of all ages, coming from all walks of life.

– Swift and short recovery period! Most women will be surprised to find that the recovery period after surgery is much shorter than expected. Within a few days from the procedure, they can resume their daily activities and even work, if it doesn’t involve any strenuous physical activities that will cause unecessary movement to the breasts. Avoid lifting arms for a few weeks after the procedure and do not sleep on your stomach or sides for a certain period to be prescribed by your surgeon.
On the flip side, there are also some disadvantages to breast surgery that needs to be addressed and discussed.
– It is a costly procedure! An intervention of this type is the most effective solution to produce the perky, youthful looking breasts you desire. However, there can be hefty costs associated with it. Nowadays, most plastic surgeons offer different payment methods to lessen the financial burdens. Of late, there has also been a rise of cosmetic surgery financing options offered by financial institutions and credit cards. An important caveat: when considering a breast augmentation procedure, especially with implants, please keep in mind that you should also set aside a budget for potential revision surgery in case complications occur. While rare, it does happen and it is always better that you are prepared.

– Just like any surgery, there are attendant risks and possible complications such as, but not limited to, fluid accumulation (seroma), capsular contracture, changes in nipple sensation, bleeding/hematoma, anesthetic reactions, implant leakage or rapture and more.
