Things to avoid after butt augmentation

04th May 2019

Plastic surgery is not a magic wand that can give anyone the buttocks and breasts of their dreams. Achieving spectacular results after plastic surgery often entails effort and dedication from the patient as well. This is why it is important to understand from the beginning what are the expectations from the patient during the post-operative period and what are the things strictly forbidden after a procedure is performed.

These are just some of the things that your plastic surgeon will tell you never to do after butt augmentation:

–    Don’t sit on your butt or lie on your back

This is one of the things that is crucial never to do after a butt augmentation. If you had implants inserted, sitting on the buttocks or lying on the back for the first three weeks post-op can lead to complications such as implant shifting and wound opening. These complications are triggered by the pressure put on the implants and incisions when sitting down too soon after the procedure. Even if butt augmentation is performed with fat grafting, the recommendation is still valid. Sitting on the buttocks where the fat cells were just transferred can cause these cells to die and lead to buttock asymmetries and an unsatisfactory result. Your plastic surgeon will advise you to rest on the tummy or the sides of the body and use a special pillow when sitting down. The pillow needs to be placed under the hamstrings to avoid direct pressure on the buttocks.

–    Don’t smoke

Smoking is one of the most serious contraindications of plastic surgery. Your plastic surgeon will ask you even from the initial meeting if you are smoking and will advise you to quit smoking at least three weeks before the procedure and remain a non-smoker for at least the same amount of time post-op. Smoking can interfere with the healing process due to the influence it has on blood coagulation and oxygenation of the tissues. Complications that can be triggered by smoking are delayed wound healing and even skin and fat tissue necrosis. Patients undergoing fat transfer should be especially concerned with not smoking as the results can be seriously affected.

–    Don’t forget to take the medication prescribed

Plastic surgery to increase the size of the buttocks is a complex procedure, and it is normal for the patient to experience a certain level of pain and discomfort afterwards. In the case of butt implants, the pain can be more intense as the gluteal muscles are often dissected to insert the implant. Fat transfer is associated with less pain. However, it can still be present either in the areas treated with liposuction or the buttocks. It is essential not to forget taking the medication prescribed by the plastic surgeon, such as analgesics and antibiotics.
