What is like to have a breast lift?

15th Jan 2019

All women must have asked themselves one of these questions at least once: why do the breasts start sagging? Should I wear a bra or not? If I exercise routinely, will my breasts be firmer? What can I do to prevent sagginess?

The reality is that the skin and implicitly, the breasts that are supported by the skin, are affected and start sagging due to gravity. In time, the skin loses elasticity and the breasts collapse. This can happen earlier in life for some women and later on for others as this factor is also corroborated with other elements that cause or accelerate breast sagginess.

All the aspects related to breasts and sagginess are conditioned by the skin quality. Some women have more resistant skin than others. The genetic inheritance, size of breasts, weight fluctuations and pregnancies are other elements that can cause or accentuate breast sagginess.

Nowadays, the only efficient and effective method to correct breast sagginess is breast lift surgery or mastopexy, as it is called in the medical world. In this article, we will discuss the common causes of breast sagginess, myths related to breast sagginess, and what it is like to have a breast lift.

Myths related to breasts sagginess

Probably because breast sagginess affects all women sooner or later, there is an abundance of myths about what causes the ptosis, how it can be prevented, or even cured.

For example, a false myth is the fact that breasts are sustained by ligaments and their sagginess is not conditioned by the quality of the skin. Actually, these ligaments are too weak, and they barely have a supportive role. This is the reason why the skin on the breasts is an important element in the aesthetics of the breasts.

Another myth is that we can influence the quality of the skin and improve the elasticity to correct ptosis by using creams, exercise, or other cosmetic procedures. When there is an excess of skin, the only method to eliminate it is through a surgical incision. No amount of physical exercises, pills or creams can eliminate saggy skin or improve its retractile capabilities once they are lost.

Then we get to the myth that wearing a bra determines a weakening of the skin envelope of the breasts. In my opinion, all women should wear a bra, even if their breasts are perfect. Or better said, the more perfect your breasts are, the more you should wear a bra. The bra has a supportive role. Just think of it as of your little anti-gravitational device specially designed for the breasts. When you wear it, your breasts will be spared from bouncing, jumping and trying to follow your every arm or body movement. Actually, you can wear the bra even overnight. Of course, choose a bra that offers less compression to be completely comfortable in your sleep. Many women with overly large breasts have discovered the benefits of wearing a bra at all times and how it can provide a tremendous relief from pain and discomfort on the spine.

Another myth that is actually pretty common is that silicone implants can lift saggy breasts. This is not true, at least not in this form. If there is minor breast ptosis and the patient desires an augmentation of the breasts, it might not be necessary also to perform the breast lift. But if the sagginess is significant and you get implants, it will become even more visible and accentuated. This is the reason why the breast lift procedure is often performed with implants so the patient can get rid of the breast sagginess while also improving the size of the breasts.

Nowadays many women resort to this procedure quite early in their lives, and this is a good thing. The intervention is performed under general anesthesia, so during the operation, there will be no discomfort or pain to be felt. Immediately after the procedure, the patient is moved to a room where she can recover from the anesthesia. Hospitalization is usually less than 24 hours for a vast majority of patients. This means that a few hours after waking up from the general anesthesia you can get up from the bed, get dressed and go home. Pain medication and antibiotics will be prescribed to help you manage the post-operative discomfort and to prevent a potential infection.

The intensity of pain after the breast lift has been described as minor or moderate by most patients undergoing the procedure, so you don’t have to worry about struggling with discomfort.

The plastic surgeon’s recommendations will be to avoid sleeping on the front or putting any type of pressure on the breasts. This means you should also avoid sexual intercourse for a few weeks.

Having a breast lift is no different than many other surgical interventions, with the only mention that ample arm movement should be limited for a week following the intervention.

The results are fully visible after the initial swelling and bruising have subsided, and this usually takes two weeks or more. You will notice that your breasts are better centered and higher on the thorax wall and that they look perkier and firmer.

Getting a breast lift nowadays is a common thing for women confronted with breast sagginess. The breast lift intervention is the only efficient method to correct breast ptosis. Because of this, more and more women resort to this procedure year after year.

The procedure is often performed under general anesthesia and takes no longer than one or two hours. The patient is usually able to leave the clinic within hours after waking up from the anesthesia if no complications occur.

The level of pain and discomfort after the breast lift are moderate, and the procedure comes with minor and few risks and potential complications.
