When can I shower after breast augmentation surgery?

The recovery period after any type of surgery can be difficult, but when it comes to breast augmentation, patients often have a lot of questions about the dos and don’ts of the first few weeks post-op. The details of the recovery period will be discussed with the plastic surgeon even from the initial meeting because it is important for patients to be aware of the appropriate behavior that needs to be adopted after the procedure. There are things important to do after breast implant surgery and also things to be avoided during the weeks and months following the procedure.

There are plenty of myths associated with this procedure, and patients can be confused about some of the details and the recovery period. For example, many patients want to know when they can shower after breast augmentation surgery. If you have a look online on forums and chat boards dedicated to plastic surgery, you might be surprised to see that some people advise patients not to shower for weeks. This is never a good idea, no matter what procedure we are talking about. When it comes to surgery, proper hygiene is essential to avoid infections, and if the patient doesn’t clean himself, this can trigger infections as well as other additional discomforts.

The plastic surgeon will tell you that you can shower starting the next day following the surgery; however, you need to follow certain instructions. For example, showers are recommended, but taking a long bath in hot water soon after surgery is not a good idea and could actually trigger complications that could otherwise be avoided.

The patient can shower soon after the surgery, but it is recommended to keep the duration of the shower as short as possible and not use water that is very hot. Moreover, keep in mind that the incision site needs to be kept clean and dry at all times. You can take the special post-op or sports bra off when you shower and also change it with a clean one afterwards. The special post-op bra is mandatory to be worn non-stop for the first few weeks post-op to reduce the swelling and support the new breasts.

Also, when showering, make sure to avoid ample arm movements or lifting the arms above the shoulders as this might trigger pain and even the opening of the incisions. An important aspect you need to discuss with the plastic surgeon is changing the dressings after the shower. He or the medical staff will explain in detail what you need to do to avoid infections that can occur as a result of improper hygiene at the incision site.

Breast augmentation surgery with implants is a complex but still delicate procedure that should only be performed by a talented, board-certified plastic surgeon.
