When will my breast implants drop?

It is understandable to want to see and feel the results of a breast implant surgery immediately after the procedure. The reality, however, is that it can take anywhere from several months to a year before the full results can be visible. Breasts require time to accommodate and get used to the implants that have been placed.

Initially, the patient may feel that her breasts are positioned too highly. This is a temporary condition, as the breast implants will take time before they naturally drop and settle. How soon the implants will drop differs from one patient to another. In some, the implants settle within a few weeks. With others, they take more than six months to even a year.

The implants gradually drop as the body heals. If the implant is placed under the breast muscle, it will naturally disturb the muscles by putting pressure on the breast tissue. This makes the breast appear higher, but as the tissues and muscles accommodate the implants, the breasts will eventually drop. The breast tissue will relax and the breast will be in the expected position and shape.

You can expedite the breast settling process by using certain medications; however, you should only use medications prescribed by your plastic surgeon. There are several prescription drugs that can help your breast muscles relax, which can in turn help the implants to settle. If your surgeon deems it necessary, you may be asked to get some massage therapy. It is important, however, to understand that a massage after plastic surgery is different from a regular massage. It uses specialized techniques with greater care to ensure relaxation of the breast muscle.

There are a number of reasons why some breast implants fail to drop. One of the common reasons is the use of extremely large implants. If the implant size and shape is not consistent with the dimensions of the chest, the implant may fail to settle. Other factors such as implant quality, poor surgical skills, improper placement of the implants, and very strong breast muscles may also prevent the implants from dropping.

For successful results, make sure to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon to perform the procedure. It is also important to ensure that the implant size and shape complement your chest dimensions, and that the implants are made of good quality material.
