New Evidence Shows Positive Long-Term Effects of Plastic Surgery

long term positive effect of plastic surgery

In 2008, a study concluded that “cosmetic interventions produce positive effects on quality of life in individuals electing to undergo cosmetic procedures”. Another long-term study recently published concludes the same thing — patients who just underwent plastic surgery demonstrate more enjoyment in life and increased self-esteem. That’s certainly good news, particularly if you’ve been thinking about having plastic surgery in Houston with Dr. Cortés, a board-certified facial and body plastic surgeon.

The Subjects

The study, published in the Clinical Psychological Science journal, wanted to know the pre-surgery goals of patients who had plastic surgery and whether they achieved these goals afterwards. The researchers studied 544 first time plastic surgery patients and compared their findings to the following groups:  264 people who previously decided to have plastic surgery but later decided against it and 1000 individuals from the general population who were never interested in having plastic surgery in the first place. Of the subjects, 87 percent of them were women. On an overall scale, there were no significant differences in the following variables amongst the 3 groups: life satisfaction, mental health, and depressiveness.

Goal Attainment Scaling

The Goal Attainment Scaling was the instrument used in the study when examining the goals of the subjects. The researchers found out that only 12 percent of the subjects have unrealistic goals. The rest were more realistic by expressing the following standard goals: “develop more self-confidence”, “eliminate blemishes”, and “feel better”.

Positive Long-Term Effects

Apart from being tested before surgery, the subjects were also surveyed 3, 6, and 12 months post-procedure. Compared to those who decided against plastic surgery at the last minute, those who just underwent surgery reported that they feel healthier and less anxious. They also felt that their body, as a whole, was more attractive.
