Should i wait after pregnancy to get a breast lift?

23rd Dec 2019

The breast lift entails incisions on the breasts to correct the sagginess that can occur due to various factors. The factors are usually are pregnancy, weight fluctuations, an excessive volume of the breasts, and also the natural aging process.

During the pre-operative consultation for the procedure, patients discover what the causes of their breast ptosis might be. Some women are confronted with sagginess and an unappealing appearance of the breasts after one or multiple pregnancies. When this happens, the patient is aware that the appearance of the breasts has changed considerably during pregnancy and hasn’t returned to the previous shape and size after breastfeeding.

Bothered and disappointed by the unsightly appearance of the breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding, many new mothers seek help from plastic surgery to get perky breasts once again. This is normal as saggy breasts are often associated with older age and not very sexy either.

We often have young women coming in for the pre-operative consultation for the breast lift asking whether they should wait until after pregnancy to get a breast lift. What happens usually is that they already had one or more pregnancies that caused the unappealing appearance of the breasts and they want to get their beautiful breasts back, even if they might want to have more children in the future.

As a rule of thumb, I advise my patients always to wait until they know their family is complete before getting a procedure such as a breast lift. There is a very simple explanation behind this recommendation. The changes that occur during pregnancy as well as the weight fluctuations that could be triggered have a considerable impact on the appearance of the breasts. This means that if you undergo the procedure and then get pregnant again, chances are your breasts will lose their beautiful appearance achieved with the help of plastic surgery and the sagginess can be present again.

There is no other contraindication to having a breast lift before getting pregnant aside from the potential alteration of the aesthetic results. Moreover, keep in mind that the patient should wait at least a year after undergoing the breast lift before getting pregnant again as the breasts should have some time to heal and restore after the trauma of the surgery before going through pregnancy.

However, it is also important to mention that the only case when I advise my patients to get the breast lift even if they desire to have more children in the future is when their daily life is significantly affected by their breasts and they are dealing with an emotional or physical discomfort on a daily basis.
